Opening your washing machine to find dirty water still sitting in the drum is annoying, especially on a busy day. The good news is that draining problems are often caused by simple blockages you can clear yourself. Before booking a repair, run through these easy checks.
Check 1: The Drain Filter
Most front-load and many top-load machines have a small drain filter, usually behind a little flap at the bottom front of the machine. Over time it collects coins, buttons, hair clips, lint, and small objects, which block the water from draining. This is the most common cause of a machine not draining.
- Place a shallow tray and old towels under the filter, as water will come out.
- Slowly unscrew the filter cap and let the water drain into the tray.
- Remove any trapped debris and rinse the filter under a tap.
- Screw it back firmly and run a short cycle to test.
Check 2: The Drain Hose
The drain hose carries water out of the machine. If it is kinked, bent, or pushed too far into the drain pipe, water cannot flow out properly. Pull the machine out gently and check that the hose is not twisted or squashed against the wall.
Check 3: A Blocked Drain Point
Sometimes the machine is fine but the drain point in the wall or floor is clogged with lint and soap scum. If water backs up or drains very slowly at that point even without the machine, the household drain itself needs clearing.
Check 4: The Wash Program
It sounds simple, but check that you did not select a program that leaves water in the drum on purpose, such as a soak or a wrinkle-care setting that holds water. Try running a dedicated Spin or Drain cycle and see if the water clears.
Check 5: The Lid or Door Switch
Many machines will not spin or drain if they think the door or lid is open. A faulty lid switch can stop the drain and spin steps even when the door is properly closed. If everything else looks clear, this may be the cause, and it usually needs a technician.
Simple Habits That Prevent Drain Problems
- Empty pockets before washing to keep coins and objects out.
- Clean the drain filter once a month.
- Use the correct amount of detergent, as too much creates scum.
- Keep the area behind the machine clear so the hose is not squashed.
